Loving without a net

Have you ever seen a child jump out of a tree or off of a moving swing into Daddy’s waiting arms? She jumps with all she has, with nothing held back to catch herself – as though there’s no danger that Daddy won’t catch her. Because there’s not – that danger simply doesn’t exist in her world. It has never occurred to her that Daddy could miss, could let her fall.
Now imagine making that leap as a grown woman. Knowing that there may not be anyone there to catch you. That you might fall, and suffer unbearable pain. But also knowing that if you don’t jump, you’ll miss the indescribable joy of flying….
Can you imagine it? Can you feel yourself flying through the air, knowing that the landing will likely be far from soft? Knowing that the landing will probably be debilitating? And knowing that if it is, you’ll still jump again? Can you feel the wonderful horrible combination of soaring and terror?
Welcome to foster parenting….

Wow! I love your use of the example there. And I did imagine myself making several leaps. I think it’s a wonderful thing to do (foster parenting).

Excellent description of how we feel adopting dogs. We just were approved for fostering and possibly adopting a new dog into our home next week! We’re getting ready for the grandparent stage of life now with kids!
